3 days before the first day of classes...

.... and I'm finally registered for "Manuscript Illumination in Western Europe" and "Heroic History: the Age of Beowulf".

We'll see how this goes...

Settling in

Picking up where I left off...

Our lovely room:

Tuesday afternoon we went exploring around St Andrews.  We went down "South Street", apparently one of the three main roads in town, and found some interesting places.  A "rummage" store with neat old things, a bakery, cheesemonger (lol), butcher, etc.  Oh yes, and of course a kilt maker's shop...

We also saw some really pretty architecture

... and some ruins....

And then finally, after some tea at a nice little cafe/restaurant, we headed back to the dorm and explored the older part of the building.  Unfortunately we couldn't find the light switch, so you'll just have to imagine the rest of the last two pics...

Arrival

After about 24 hrs in cars, planes, shuttles, cabs, and of course lots of airport terminals, we (Veronika and I) finally arrived at our residence hall.  We're staying in the modern part of the building (pictured below) but there is a very lovely, slightly creepy, very old wing of the building (the Old Wing) which was built sometime in the late 1800's.  It was the first residence hall at the university. (pictures later...)

There were some lovely views from the cab on the drive from Edinburgh, but unfortunately it's hard to get a good shot through a dirty window in a moving vehicle.  Speaking of which, it was kind of scary being on the wrong side of the road.....

Anyway, since we didn't have our keys yet, someone had to let us in.  Fortunately, a very nice girl walked up just as we arrived and not only swiped us in, but also helped us with our suitcases, directed us to the hall office, and informed us that lunch was on at the moment.

The room is huge, and looks even bigger with our little bit of stuff to fill it.  The picture above is the view from my window.  Pretty nice, huh?

After tossing our stuff in our room, eating lunch (where we met several nice people), we returned and promptly crashed for an hour and a half nap... which may or may not have actually have turned out to be nearly four hours. Then we, uh... somehow through forgetfulness, lack of the correct local time, and some form of miscommunication, we missed dinner.  Which is only 30 minutes long.  At least they still had bread, fruit, and tea out for us? :D
